Char Siu Pork (Chinese BBQ Pork)





IS CHAR SIU HARD TO MAKE?

Char siu is actually a lot easier to make than imagined. Usually, my family and friends only go to restaurants for char siu and never make it at home. They think it's really difficult to make it at home, but that's actually not the case.


CHAR SIU SAUCE

Making the marinating sauce from scratch can be challenging since some ingredients are hard to be found in North America. So, I just used store bought char siu sauce. The brand I used was Lee Kum Kee. Their sauce flavor is really authentic. You can also get the sauce through Amazon if you can't find it at your local stores (not sponsored). 

So here is the full recipe for making char siu at home:


EASY HOMEMADE CHAR SIU RECIPE

Steps:
  1. Preheat oven to 400F.
  2. Cut 454g of pork shoulder into thick strips (around 3-inch wide and 6-inch long).
  3. Put the pork shoulder strips and 5 tbsp char siu sauce into a zip lock bag and marinate overnight or at least 3 hours.
  4. In a bowl, add honey, vegetable oil, and 2 tbsp marinating char siu sauce from the zip lock bag, mix well.
  5. Place a sheet of aluminum foil on baking tray, then place baking rack on top.
  6. Take out pork strips from zip lock bag, place it flat on baking rack.
  7. Brush the honey-oil mixture on all sides of pork strips, then let it bake for 10-15 minutes.
  8. Brush the honey-oil mixture on both sides again, then pork strips over, let it bake for another 10 minutes. 
  9. Take char siu out of the oven, let it sit for 10 minutes before cutting into slices.
  10. Enjoy!
